Dialog Semiconductor, Edinburgh, United Kingdom High power efficiency, small size and reduced heat dissipation are highly desirable in battery-powered mobile systems and switched-mode class-D amplifiers can readily satisfy these requirements. However, full adoption of class-D technology in mobile systems has been somewhat limited due to concerns such as signal distortion and noise, poor power supply noise rejection, electromagnetic interference (EMI) and the requirement for external LC filters. Recently, filterless class-D architectures have become popular [1-4]. These architectures can generally be divided into two categories: pulse-width modulation (PWM) type [1, 3] and ΔΣ-modulation type [2]. In addition, sliding-mode architectures have also been researched [4]. The recently reported ΔΣ class-D amplifier [2] demonstrates that class-D amplifiers can achieve very low total harmonic distortion levels, THD+N of 0.001% @100Hz.
