S-OSC and R-OSC (S-DIV and R-DIV) derive a time difference ∆TSU+N·∆T, which is then converted to ∆VSU+∆V and D2[k] in the same manner. Finally, the kth C2D conversion result DLSB[k] is obtained as D1[k]%D2[k], so it contains only the desirable ∆C information by canceling out the time difference at the initial phase. Overall, PD AMP detects the initial time difference of S-OSC and R-OSC with a digital comparator and an edge detector and amplifies the period information with frequency dividers (Fig. 28.1.3(top)). By subtracting the two T2D conversion results, DLSB[k] not only represents the desirable ∆C information but also is independent of 1) CP leakages during the PD AMP operation and 2) any DC voltage errors like comparator offsets.
