Abstract 5G new-radio frequency-range-2 CMOS PAs with high peak-to-average-power ratios suffer from low efficiency, calling for compact and fast symbol-power-tracking (SPT) supply modulators (SMs). Inductor-based SPT shows limited tracking speed, while multilevel switched-capacitor approaches need redundant capacitors and switches. The proposed prototype dual-capacitor relay SPT SM with overshoot-free adaptive constant on-time control achieves <290ns tracking using a 0402 inductor, suitable for compact PA arrays. The 5G new-radio (NR) frequency-range-2 (FR2) standard supports up to 400MHz bandwidth and uses orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) to achieve high data rates with complex modulation, such as quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM).
