INTRODUCTION The field of engineering needs your help! The profession is being presented with one of the most critical challenges it has ever faced. In most of the world, fewer and fewer kids are choosing to pursue engineering careers. The situation is even worse among women and other underrepresented groups. Much has been written about the causes of this problem and what needs to be done. Too often, responsive actions are directed at someone else: teachers, parents, politicians. Sure, they can help, but in the end, the responsibility lies with all of us, the engineers of the world! This paper is a call to action about what you as a practicing engineer can do to help to change this dire situation. First, we will look at engineering career trends worldwide and try to understand what they mean. We will explore what school-aged students are hearing, or, more often, not hearing, about engineering.
