This paper reports on a fully integrated electrical mode-locked oscillator. Modelocked oscillators are traveling wave oscillators that excite multiple spectral modes of a transmission line resonator and lock them in phase, generating short duration pulses, as illustrated in Fig. 27.8.1. Electrical linear mode-locked oscillators have been reported previously [1,2], but did not produce DC pulses (i.e. no carrier), were not fully integrated, had pulse widths greater than 2ns, and had repetition rates less than 100MHz. The periodic train of short duration pulses generated by the oscillator may find wide application in many areas, such as integrated high-speed sampling, clocking and time-domain metrology [3,4]. The mode-locked oscillator achieves sub-50ps pulse widths at a repetition rate of 8.6GHz. The amplifier consists of three stages.
