Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN 1. Introduction The pace of technological change continues to enable new methods for interfacing with our world. An engine of that change has been the increasing capability in the electronics industry, as highlighted by Moore’s law, driving the semiconductor market for the last 40 years. This engine enabled a diverse set of capabilities for sensing, signal processing, actuating, and communicating with the environment. These technologies are also being applied to revolutionize general healthcare, in particular through the implantable-device industry. 2. The Proliferation of Technologies for Therapeutic Applications From the first battery-powered cardiac pacemaker, semiconductor electronics has enabled implantable medical devices to both save lives and improve patients’ quality of life.
