1.0 Introduction Minimizing global consumption of electrical energy is undoubtedly one of the most important challenges facing the world today. According to Exxon Mobil Energy Outlook 2010, economic growth and technological progress could increase global electricity demand from 20,000TWh today to 30,000TWh in 2030, with demand continuing to rise by 2.2% per year (Fig. 1.2.1) [1]. This level of increase is unsustainable for several reasons, including the world’s diminishing fossil-fuel resources and the effect on global warming. However, the fact remains that electrical energy is an essential part of today’s world and therefore the major challenge is to use it more efficiently. To this end, the International Energy Agency (IEA)1 has identified increased efficiency in end-use products as the most important contributor to the reduction of global energy-related CO2 emissions. According to the IEA, better power efficiency could account for more than half of total savings by the end of the n
