A mutual-capacitance touch-sensing architecture and a system that enables concurrent usage of multiple active styluses having different properties such as color, thickness, shape, etc., are developed and verified with use of an existing touch controller [1]. An extension of the architecture to handle wireless active styluses is also developed and verified with an analog front-end (AFE) IC. Active-stylus systems built upon mutual-capacitance touch-sensing are commercially available [2][3], in which a stylus equipped with a battery emits energy from its tip for the sensor to receive a stronger signal. These active-stylus systems cannot readily be replaced by passive-stylus systems, even if high-SNR techniques are used [1][4], since active-stylus systems have clear advantages due to the stronger signal observed while detecting a stylus hovering above the sensor or in close vicinity to a finger or palm touch.
