Industry application trends have seen important usage-model shifts from the PC era to the mobile-computing era, where individuals have moved from possessing one device to multiple devices that connect them to people [1]. Today, new applications are contributing to extending this connectivity between individuals to between the machines themselves, creating a lifestyle that is not simply connected but productively smart [2]. In particular, four new applications are emerging, ushering in this era of “ubiquitous computing”: In mobile applications, VR/AR smartphone games are expected to evolve into realtime holographic streams of high-quality 8K short films. In high-performance computing applications, networking speeds which support today’s real-time social networking are expected to increase to support real-life VR social networking.
