Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong, China 1 2 Linear pluggable optics (LPO) emerges as an attractive candidate for short-reach optical communications for its low power consumption, low cost and low latency compared with digital signal processing (DSP)-based solutions. For single-mode fiber applications depicted in the top of Fig. 36.8.1, LPO requires linear drivers with equalization capability to drive optical modulators for low-distortion electrical-to-optical conversion. To increase the extinction ratio of the optical signal, the linear driver is supposed to provide large swing as well as high gain. Moreover, bandwidth is an important concern, as the large swing typically comes with large-size transistors, which bring severe parasitics and degrade the link speed.
