Millimeter-wave (mm-wave) frequencies are widely used in applications that require high throughput and/or small sizes thanks to the wide available bandwidth and small achievable antenna-array sizes. Applications such as portable consumer electronics and AR/VR headsets also require low-power operation to maximize battery life. Unfortunately, there are no SAW-equivalent filters available at these frequencies, and thus any mm-wave receivers must combat out-of-band interferers on their own. This typically involves consuming significant power in the pursuit of linearity and filtering at mm-wave frequencies. For example, receivers that use mixer-first approaches with N-path filters (Fig. 5.10.1, top left) can achieve excellent linearity and filtering performance, though at the expense of significant clocking power to the N-path mixer stages and high noise figure due to the lack of RF amplification, for example 13 to 89mW and 8 to 20dB in [1-5], respectively.
