Abstract This paper presents a 40Gb/s 1-to-N VCSEL driver using 150nm GaN HEMT with fT/fMAX of 50GHz/154GHz. The proposed topology can drive VCSEL arrays in series or parallel without the need of pre-driver, using a common-source main data stage and auxiliary adjustable bias stage for different array configurations. Measured optical eye diagrams show 8mW OMA at 40Gb/s NRZ with 3-tap FFE for 4 VCSELs in series under a 15V supply. The driver consumes 480mW. For PAM-4 input, the driver can support 38Gb/s. Emerging non-terrestrial network (NTN) links demand high optical modulation amplitude (OMA) to sustain long-reach free-space channels. Conventional NTN links utilize largefootprint optical modulators with large-swing drivers to satisfy the OMA requirement, suffering from high power and area overhead [1-2].
