Japan, 4Iwate University, Iwate, Japan 1 Abstract Conventional satellites are costly and unreliable. We propose a pico-satellite formation as a virtual phased array to reduce costs and improve reliability. A low-power FDD transceiver wirelessly receives an LO signal from a gateway, eliminating power-hungry PLLs. Precise beamforming is achieved by calibrating path differences and using SRFA technology. This work enables future low-cost, highly reliable satellite communications. Conventional satellite communication has relied on large, monolithic satellites orbiting in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) at altitudes of 500 km (Fig. 5.1.1). Notably, systems like BlueWalker, developed by AST, require large deployable 8m×8m antennas to achieve sufficient gain.
